A 29-year-old man from Västerås in central Sweden suspected of sharing files from his computer was today acquitted by Svea Court of Appeal. Last year the man was the first person in Sweden to be convicted of file-sharing, having been charged with making the Swedish film Hip Hip Hora available for download from the internet.

And the best part is ... Since the crime does not carry a high enough punishment under Swedish law to allow for a search of the defendant's house, this means it will be virtually impossible to prove file-sharing crimes in the future.

It's finally happened. Anyone who used Kazaa during the early days may remember the client's lengthy EULA (End User Licensing Agreement), which contained verbiage regarding its eventual transition to a pay service. In fact, the reason why this FastTrack client had a 128 bitrate limit was to help promote the application as a potential authorized service rather than an absolute piracy tool.

I was looking for a way to process downloaded NZB files the most easiest way possible. That means downloading the NZB files to one directory, and let some program automatically download the binary posting, decode the files, check them with par2, repair if needed and then unrar the files and place the processed file in another directory. hellanzb dose all this and more!! What are NZB files?

NZB files contain a list of Message-ID numbers for usenet newsgroup posts. They were invented by NewzBin.com for use with their searching service. For example, suppose you search for a file and NewzBin finds it. Now you want to download it, but NewzBin is not a news provider, only a search service, so you need to download the file from your ISP's news server. You could use your news-reader to go into the appropriate newsgroup and look for the posts. Or you could have NewzBin create an NZB file for you, and then use a program like newsleecher to open the NZB file and begin to immediately download the file. In a newsgroup that contains millions of posts, this will save you loads of time.

NZB files are plain text and can be viewed with a test editor. The data is in XML format, which is sort of like HTML, but designed to format data rather than web pages.

My Old trusty Newsgroup\nzb indexing site newzbin.com is no longer excepting new members.

With immediate effect, we are no longer accepting any new user signups/registrations.

Why are we doing this?
The primary reason is that we simply feel we have enough members now. The hardware behind the site is not going to cope with much more load without significant overhaul, and we want to keep the site quick and responsive for our existing members.

Additionally, we are finding that we're getting to the stage where we're physically unable to respond in a timely manner to all the emails we get - most of them are from new members. By stopping new signups, the amount of emails we get will hopefully decrease - giving us time to work on the new Newzbin site instead.

We may move to a restricted signup (probably 10 or 20 per day, something like that) in the future if it looks workable, or perhaps a "introduce a member" scheme. We'd be happy to read suggestions along those lines - please feel free to comment.

On a regular website, in order to get the best speeds, it was wise not to tell others about the file. With BitTorrent, YOU BENEFIT from a larger group of people knowing about a file like this. BitTorrent pieces together the file you are downloading, to where the first part of a file you get may be the last part someone else gets. As you continue to retrieve the file, Bit Torrent also uploads data to other users - so the person with 98% of the file done is directed to the people with the 2% of the file they still need.

Seeder: The person who makes the torrent, uplodes it to a tracker and uploads the file with bittorrent to the downloaders. Or someone who has downloaded a file and is now only uploading that file, called seeding.

Leecher: A person who is downloading a file.

Tracker: An application run by a webmaster of a bittorrent site. It regulates the up and downloads of the torrents which use the tracker's announce url. Basically it keeps track of who has or needs a certain file, with that info the users bittorrent clients can connect to eachother and exhange data.

Reseed: If someone seeds a torrent again after they had already finished and closed it earlier. This is done when a torrent has leechers, but no seeder. It's a great way to help out the community. It reactivates the torrent so others can now finish their download and then seed.

Peers: Someone who is uploading and/or downloading a torrent (seeders and leechers).

Swarm: All the seeders and leechers on a torrent.

Announce url: The website address your bittorrent client uses to connect to a tracker in order to get peer data, when you make a torrent, make sure you use the announce url of the site you want to upload your torrent to.

Hit and run: Closing down your torrent immediatly after you finish your download, this is very selfish and can and will get you banned from many sites. Try to always seed to 1:1 ratio (upload as much MB as you have downloaded from a certain torrent) and keep uploading at least a few hours after you have completely finished downloading your file.

Torrent: Small text file that points to a certain tracker and a file hash for downloading with bittorrent.

Dvdrs.net, a usenet search engine targeted by the Motion Pictures Association of America in its recent anti-piracy campaign, has closed while the site is restructured. Part of the restructuring will be the deletion of its usenet index.

In a statement posted on dvdrs.net just days before its disappearance, Descds, a site administrator, said, "The site will be closed for restructure. All reference to Usenet will be removed, the logo adapted (its a long time coming anyway) and NZB indexing sections dropped."

Descds reports that he is unhappy about Dvdrs.net being seen as a piracy network, as it has been since news of the MPAA's actions. "Since the PR press release broke we have been seen as an organized pirate network and this is unacceptable. In the first day of the press release we had 100 new members sign up looking for pirated movies. This has continued everyday since and we will not allow DVDRS to be used this way. We have not, will not and never shall host illegal files here," he said.

"We also understand that DVDRS will always be seen, in light of recent press, as a site that dealt in illegal file sharing. We feel there is no way we can recover from this and thus will re-launch Talk DVD with some of DVDRS database and ideas."

Descds also stated that he hoped the MPAA could see that he was happy to work with the MPAA to reach a resolution, maintaining that he had done nothing wrong and that the site was far more than a usenet indexing site.

"Indexing Usenet is still a part of the site granted, but we are now far more than that with in depth articles on DVD-R/W, DVD+R/W, DVD+R DL, DVDRAM, BLU-RAY and HD DVD media, software and hardware technology. We also have a healthy movie, game and hardware review section as well as active news. Our forums are also more about technology than Usenet," Descds said in his statement.
